SHORE FRONT PARKWAY

Location Pin

Following Hurricane Sandy, a significant portion of Shore Front Parkway’s recreational facilities suffered extensive damage complete devastation. Although substantial efforts have been devoted to restoring the Boardwalk and concession buildings, the recreation facilities along the Parkway required extensive redevelopment. The development of the Rockaway Parks Conceptual Plan in 2014 laid the groundwork for a holistic park system along the beach’s waterfront. Through community engagement, the stretch of beach-front property spanning from Beach 77th St. to Beach 81st St. was envisioned as a versatile active and passive recreational space.

Utilizing the Rockaway Parks Conceptual Framework, the Multi-Purpose Area seamlessly integrates adjacent design vocabulary and links adjacent amenities along the Parkway. A gently rolling, expansive natural lawn invites moments of tranquility, accommodating passive pursuits such as yoga sessions and movie nights. For those seeking more active engagement, a dedicated recreational sand volleyball court, adult fitness equipment, and ping pong tables cater to individuals of diverse ages and abilities. Embracing sustainability, shade structures equipped with solar panels and charging ports offer respite from the sun’s rays, while precast concrete terrace seats, crafted from recycled plastic lumber, serve as ideal vantage points for spectators to enjoy dynamic volleyball matches. Additional amenities include oversized ‘pebble’ seating stones, benches, and drinking fountains.
