PS 235K | JANICE MARIE KNIGHT SCHOOL

At PS 235K, an elementary and middle school in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, ABB removed three temporary classroom units to reconstruct and expand open play areas. The original play area was limited to painted line games; ABB reimagines the space as four quadrants each accessible to the other while remaining clearly defined as distinct open areas in their own right.
A winding painted pathway connects the two schoolyard entrances. It follows a planted area of trees, shrubs, and groundcover, and collects two play areas and a passive recreation space, accommodating open classroom teaching activities, along length. When school is not in session the PS 235K Community Playground opens to the public.
