PIER 40 BALLFIELD RESTORATION
At Pier 40, ABB provided full design services for the reconstruction of intensively-used community courtyard and rooftop sports fields. This project enhances the physical and functional capacity of the Pier’s playing fields by replacing outdated synthetic turf with a new, more advanced system that offers more durable fibers supporting more intensive play and use. ABB also reconstructed perimeter fencing, sports netting, and other support areas using durable materials chosen to last over a full 10 to 20-year life cycle.
Originally designed in 1958 as passenger ship terminal, today the 14-acre Pier 40 contains a commercial parking garage and two intensively used full-sized soccer fields that also accommodate baseball and football games. It is the largest structure in Hudson River Park and home to the administrative offices of the Hudson River Park Trust.
